HIKE WITH PENGUINS

Departing from our office at the tourist dock in Ushuaia, we drive in our minibuses towards northeast along Nationals route 3 & J, the appealing road to Estancia Harberton. This is the first farm on the island, founded in 1886 by the Anglican missionary Thomas Bridges, and it is located at 90 kms from Ushuaia, on the Beagle Channel. We sail from Harberton harbor to Martillo Island, a 15 minute ride on a semi-rigid boat (vessel capable of navigation in the area). On the island, we walk for 1 hour along Gentoo and Magellanics penguins, always with a guide, experiencing a unique adventure. Martillo Island is part of the Estancia Harberton, and home to Magellanic penguins between September and April. They share the habitat with other birds, such as skúas (their main predator), petrels, cormorants, vultures and South American terns.  The rookery hosts around 1000 nests, and is one of the three Magellanic penguin rookeries in Tierra del Fuego. There is also a small colony of 9 breeding couples of gentoo penguins (Pygocelis Papua), the only one in South America.

Gable Island and Penguin Rookery (with or without canoeing)

This full-day excursion takes 16 passengers for a ride, to navigate, to walk and to make discoveries in one of the roughest and most beautiful places in the Beagle Channel.

Once we arrive to Lasiphashaj river, and wearing rubber boots, overpants and life-jackets provided by us, the group starts a canoeing adventure down the river that leads into the sea. Once canoeing on the Beagle Channel, we set course to the ranch. Along the way we may encounter wildlife: lots of different sea birds. Also, it is not unusual to find sea lions sunbathing in little islands in our way to Harberton port.

After 2 hours on the rafts and a short stop on terra firma, we leave on a motor boat towards Martillo Island, where we’ll have the chance to see penguins in their breeding lair. Then the motor boat take us to our main atraccion at Gable Island, where we have some snacks, good wine and a delicious meal.

After a nice cup of cofee were go for a hike to know more of this gorgeous island, crossing over beaver damms and through the forest to reach the Beagle Channel shore where we’ll take the boat to start our return to Ushuaia.

National Park/ Trekking + Canoeing

Tierra del Fuego National Park is one of the most frequently visited places in Ushuaia: it is close to the city, it is easily accessible and it does not require to be approached in any particular way. It is said that it can be visited any way you might want, but the sure thing is that it might not reveal its secret to those who do not get into the landscape or do not pay enough attention to the wonders hidden inside it.

We propose to discover the true nature of the secret within the Tierra del Fuego National Park. With our specialized (and extraordinary) guides it is possible to get to know in detail this recovered paradise, where the mountains are accessible from the sea, and the fresh water of rivers and lakes mixes with the sea. On this tour you get to walk through the forest, and canoeing down rivers, and across lagoons to get into the famous Lapataia Bay.

Canal Fun & Nature stands for its name, and proposes a trip around the National Park involving ornithology, geology, ecology, trekking, canoeing and photography. We’ll bring along our expertise, service and our attention to detail so that you may be able to concentrate on every attraction the place has to offer. It is not far from Ushuaia city, and getting there is easy. Do not miss the chance to get to know the National Park the way only Canal Fun & Nature can offer you!

City Trek

Ushuaia lives between the Andes and the Beagle Channel, within a wilderness providing plenty of superb views. Ushuaia’s main feature is its isolation: it is the southernmost city in the World and that makes it even more unique. It took white men three and a half centuries from the time the first European came through the region finally to settle here. Very far from any other city, and because of the harsh living conditions, the development of the place was delayed until the turn of the 20th century. The first attempt to populate this place during the past century was a prison, which became the centre around which Ushuaia revolved during the following 50 years. During the 1970’s, the growth of the city was favoured by a law passed to promote industry, thus turning Ushuaia from a little village with some 5 000 inhabitants into what nowadays is a city of over 70 000.

We invite you to go around this city, to admire its magnificent views, to stroll along beautiful paths and to learn the stories of those who have chosen to live in this unique place. City Trek is an invitation to a tour around Ushuaia, a walk in which to discover its overwhelming natural beauty, and also to consider man’s relationship with nature.

Sea Kayak

This activity combines much of the appeal of hill-walking or photography safaris with a maritime aspect, and a vast vantage point that broadens the area of discovery to the seas man has been sailing for the last 7 000 years. The Yamana, the native people in this landscape, used fragile tree bark canoes. The women were doing the paddling and also used to dive to collect mussels. The children took care of the fire inside the canoes while the man braded the spear in search for sea lions.

In double sea kayaks, we’ll sail bound to conquer uninhabited beaches and majestic places. If you ever wanted to have the experience of rowing in a legendary area, the best specialized guides will go with you. Also, we will provide you with the proper equipment and with all the safety requirements needed for a successful adventure.

Experience Tierra del Fuego from a different point of view: from the water, the very place where this latitudes history was born.
