BEAGLE CHANNEL NAVIGATION & WALK WITH PENGUINS

Departing from our office at the tourist pier of the city of Ushuaia, we head on our boat Eclaireurs heading southeast to discover the Beagle Channel, having as final destination the Estancia Harberton. On the way we will stop at Bird Island where we can see a colony of Imperial Cormorants and other birds such as skuas, giant southern petrels and black-browed albatrosses; In Isla de los Lobos we can appreciate the South American sea lions of one and two hairs. Once in the archipelago Les Eclaireurs we can see the famous homonymous lighthouse which also has colonies of imperial cormorants and rockers in their islets. We will leave the lighthouse to continue sailing to our destination, on the way you can see the predominant vegetation of the area, as well as the town of Puerto Williams (Chile) in Isla Navarino. Once at Estancia Harberton, we will sail for 15 minutes from the pier to Isla Martillo on a semi-rigid boat. On the island we will walk for an hour between Magellanic penguins and papuas, always with a guide. Back at the estancia there will be time for lunch (not including food or drink) and visit the museum of bones of birds and marine mammals Acatushún. Tierra del Fuego National Park

t is located 11 km away from the city. We will be able to appreciate lakes, lagoons and rivers within its limits, and their exit towards Beagle Channel, characteristic that makes the difference with the other national parks of our country.

Departing from the Maipu Avenue towards the southwest by the national route nro. 3, we will drive out of the city passing by the slope of the Susana Mount, witness of the work of the prisoners of the old prison, where now the Southern Fuegian Railway is located. Here we will stop for this optional tour.

Continuing through the valley to the deviation that take us to the Ensenada Bay, where we will be able to contemplate the Redonda and Estorbo Islands and on the other coast of the Channel of Beagle, the snow-white Mountains of the Sampaio Chain (Chile). Back again on the national route #3 with the fuegian forest and its flora close to the road we will go to the Roca Lake to do a long walk by the lake coast and by the Lapataia river, originated in the lake. From this point we can see the Cóndor Hill natural border with Chile.

We will go towards the other end of the Park, where finalizes the route nro. 3 at Lapataia Bay, on the way to the mentioned bay we will observe the Green Lagoon and the Black Lagoon, large growing peat bog. Finally we will pass by the beaver dams, whose footpath will lead to Lapataia Bay.

End of the World Train

At the Pipo River’s valley, we can find the Southern Fuegian Railway Station, after a brief visit of its buildings we will start the train tour that will take us visiting part of the old railway used by the prisoners of the Old Prison. We will cross bridges and peat bogs and we will stop at the Macarena Cascade. After a small description of the zone that we visited we will continue our trip, entering the National Park Tierra del Fuego, towards where the old Lombardich sawmill and to the end of the railway we meet the National route #3 ending our train tour.

Lago Escondido & Fagnano

Departing from Ushuaia and again on the National route #3 (Pan-American) towards the north of the island, to reach the Fuegian Andes through valleys covered by peat bogs.

We will cross the Carbajal, the Huskies, Tierra Mayor and Las Cotorras valleys, where it is possible, during the winter to practice the cross-country ski style. The next point of the tour will be the Garibaldi Pass (450 mts over the sea level), which we will cross the Mountain range of the Andes, with the beautiful view of the Lakes Escondido and Fagnano. From here we will start the way down to the other side of the Andes and will stop at Petrel “hosteria” besides the Escondido Lake, after a short stop will continue to the sawmills area, specifically to the Martinez sawmill ( out of operation this days ), at the coast of Fagnano lake and after visiting the Fagnano lake we will go back to Las Cotorras valley to taste the typical fueguian lamb barbecue.

City Tour Ushuaia

Ushuaia, capital of Tierra del Fuego, is located at the coast of the Beagle Channel surrounded by Le Martial Mountains that offers this unique combination of mountains, sea, glaciers and forest in Argentina.

Departing from Maipú avenue, towards the Footbridge Luis Pedro Fique, we will cross this narrow pas that ends at La Mission neighbourhood area chosen by the first white men settled down in Ushuaia. Other districts to visit will be the Brown and Solier, built by the first immigrants at the beginning of the 20th century. During the tour we will be able to observe old houses pertaining to the first fuegian families like Bebans, Pastorizas, Cangas, Fiques, Salomons, Ramos and the Provincial Legislature, old Government’s house. Also we will be able to observe the contrast of the incredible growth produced by the arrival of new settlers during the 80’s.

Penguin Colony

The sailing route is the same as the one to the Harberton “Estancia” with the difference that we do not visit the “estancia”, sailing back to Ushuaia, without entering the Harberton Bay.

In this excursion we visit Remolino “Estancia”, in whose coast it lies the hull of the cargo vessel and passengers Mte. Sarmiento. The old style in its house was preserved, and in one of their rooms the history and recovered objects of this shipwreck are exhibited.

Beagle Channel Navigation

We start our tour from the tourist local wharf crossing Ushuaia’s wide Bay until reaching the Beagle Channel across Paso Chico.

There we sail arround la Isla de los Pájaros where we will see Skúas, Albatros of Black Eyebrow , Patos Vapor, Cauquenes, Gaviotas Cocineras and Gaviotas Grises; and la Isla de los Lobos where we can observe seals of one and two hair.

Both islands belong to the Archipelago Bridges. When come to the Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse (The Illuminators), we will be able to see the colonies of Imperial Cormorants and Roqueros Cormorants; and also listen to the history of the sinking of the SS Monte Cervantes who led in 1930.

Finishing the trip you will be able to see the mountains that uorround the Ushuaia’s city. It is a tour of great historical and landscape value, visiting privileged and interesting points along the whole trip.

Hiking Mount Pelado

The Lookout over the Skies of Ushuaia

This hike to reach a lookout located over 850 metres (2 790 feet) above Ushuaia is for those who love heights. At the summit of this mount a 360º panorama awaits us: mount Olivia and mount Cinco Hermanos, the Carvajal and Andorra valleys, the Beagle Channel, Murray Pass, Navarino and Hoste islands and the best view of Ushuaia. During a 3 hour-long uphill hike through the forest, we will have an intimate encounter with this milenary ecosystem. As we climb we might hear the mount pulse under our feet and hear its breath whispering in the trees. Once we reach the tree line, without the shelter of the forest, in the open we’ll see what the condors see. It is a steep and demanding hike, for which fitness is essential, but it pays-off with a moment between the clouds that exceeds imagination.
